OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAM
The interest center concept for all age groups was created initially for our school age children. Children approximately 6-12 years old as with all-children, are unique and have different needs and interests. They need a chance to be children, and young adults.
Most enter the doors of the center famished and full of unspent energy. Those children need a snack and want to go directly to outdoor play, which we supervise. Other children need a chance to relax, slow down, and take a break from the fast pace. We try to meet the needs of all the children.
Interest centers are our ways of meeting the needs of every child. Children can participate in larger group activities or manipulative, games, etc. with four or five friends. There are interest centers set up for one or two children who need a break from the larger group and want to be alone, or just want to be with one friend. We have a quiet area for homework, independent work, letter writing, reading, etc. We offer arts and crafts for interested children.
In addition, children have special activities such as movies, skating, etc. which varies from center to center. We add these special activities during holidays and public-school breaks, so that a "vacation from school" will be a real vacation.
We offer outside and inside activities, as well as free play and organized games and activities. Our staff attend workshops and other training which is designed to meet the needs of the older child.
